Oscar noms were announced this morning and to a much more enthusiastic reaction than years past. In stark contrast with 2016's #OscarsSoWhite fiasco, this year's nominees are as diverse as they are talented-- in fact, the most diverse in the ceremony's 89 year-long history. Standouts include Denzel Washington (Fences) and Ruth Negga (Loving), each picking up a nod for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Barry Jenkins, the visionary behind the wildly successful Moonlight, also made history as the 5th black man to be nominated for Best Director, bringing the movie's total nomination count to 8. But the biggest headline by far has been LaLaLand's jaw-dropping 14 nominations, including one for Best Picture. It ties Titanic and All About Eve as having the most nominations in Oscar history. The film stood out amongst other frontrunners as a rare modern musical, combining a melancholic jazz soundtrack with stunning technicolour visuals. We expect it to win big on Feb 26th, but in a year filled with exceptional nominees, there's no telling who will walk home with the biggest prize of them all.
