God is a Woman?

2174

Two weeks ago, Ariana Grande released another single from her upcoming album 'Sweetener'.

The song titled 'God is a woman' is set to spark conversations and subvert traditional and patriarchal values. The music video is creative and dense, packing endless symbols, references, imagery, and sexuality together; adding voice to the artistic canon of female empowerment.

In the music video, Grande is seen dressed up as females in different roles such as a schoolgirl, a mother, and also, a God. The video presents the female body and beauty front and center, especially in the scene where Grande's body is submerged in purple and blue paint with only colors to cover her intimate parts. It is a signature look that beauty gurus and YouTubers have been recreating.

To bring female empowerment to a whole new level, Grande suggests that God is a woman and that femininity is divine. She recreates classical religious paintings such as Michelangelo's Creation of Adam by replacing all the characters with women of different colors. Grande is also seen sitting on earth twirling her fingers to create hurricanes and storms, playing the role of mother nature.

My favorite shot of the video has to be when Ari breaks the glass ceiling with her hammer, shattering boundaries and making a statement. Clean and symbolic.

At the end of the day, it's a video that celebrates womanhood. Let us know what you think about the video. Can God be a woman? Tell us your thoughts.
