Oil Pulling: Good for more than healthy gums

Oil Pulling also known as gandusha is used in Ayurvedic medicine. Originated from India oil pulling is an oral health practice. "The oral health practices of Ayurveda include chewing on sticks and eating herbs, as well as oil pulling. Original practitioners of oil pulling used sunflower and sesame oils as a way to prevent bleeding gums, decay, dryness of throat, oral malodour, cracked lips and for strengthening teeth gums and the jaw"

  • Improve acne
  • Whiten teeth
  • Boosts your immune system

There are various oils that can be used to oil pull (Organic Sesame oil, Sunflower seed oil) but unrefined coconut oil is more beneficial because coconut oil is said to fight Streptococcus mutans (A bacteria that contributes to tooth decay) and gingivitis (Inflammation of the gums).

 

How to Oil Pull Using Coconut Oil:

It is advisable to oil pull first thing in the morning after waking up. (Do not brush or drink any liquids before)

  • Put 1-2 Tablespoons of oil into the mouth
  • Gently swish for 15-20 minutes
  • Spit into trashcan
  • Rinse well with warm water ( you can also rinse with warm salt water)
  • Brush teeth to get rid of residue

Repeat 3-4 times per week

Tip 1: If your jaw aches, you can do the procedure for 5-10 mins

Tip 2: Do not spit oil residue into your sink, toilet or shower drain as it can cause future clogging of drainage pipes. The best method is use a trash bag or paper towel.

Tip 3: Be careful not to swallow the Oil as it contains the toxins and bacteria that have been pulled.
