There seems to be no end in sight for rapes in India. In a shocking news report published in Times of India late last week, there has been a marked increase in sexual assaults in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in the countruy. It only gets more horrifying as news of gang rapes make frequent appearances in the news.
To add to this further, the TOI reports, shops in the state have started selling short clips from these assaults. Depending on how ‘exclusive’ the clip is deemed to be, it can range in price from 50 to 150 INR (0.75 – 2 USD). Once a customer pays for the ‘content’ the clip can be downloaded instantly on the cell phone or saved on a pen drive. Thousands of videos are being sold everyday.
According to the report, a shopkeeper in Agra says that porn is passe and these ‘real life crimes’ are in high demand these days.
Oftentimes the clips are taken from social media but it is also becoming alarmingly common for rapists to make videos as they assault a victim collectively, put them online, use it as a blackmail tool or even sell it.
Many people have been calling for the resignation of the Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for an increase in lawlessness and sexual crimes in Uttar Pradesh.
