Gucci placed their runway in Arles, France last night for their brand new Cruise 2019 collection. The setting was entirely unconventional- the Italian brand decided to stage the runway at the Promenade des Alyscamps, which is a Roman cemetery overflowing with candelabras and real fire engulfing the models. Creative director Alessandro Michele chose this location to match their theme- "it's the idea of death as fascination."
Alessandro continues with his reasoning by saying “Alyscamps is a Roman cemetery, but it’s also not a cemetery, it was a promenade, it became a walk in the 1700s; it is hybridized, it does not look like a cemetery because it is and it isn’t. I like things that seem like something but are not.” The collection itself is filled with Victorian motifs such as cross necklaces, velvet capes and gothic ornaments, and we can see the combination of creepy and beautiful come together in harmony.
