Selena Gomez has been teasing her now released music video for her latest song Back To You for the past 5 days. We all know Selena loves her vintage vibes and this music video is full of old school cinematic touches that play homage to silent films from back in the day.
The music video begins with Selena dressed in a fresh take on the classic flapper dress at a party looking bored while eyeing a boy across the room. The two "speak" but in silent film style with captions below. They decide to steal a car together with him musing that she "kinda looks like Selena Gomez", she broke the fourth wall by rolling her eyes and speaking directly (sans audio of course) to the audience "can you believe this guy?".
While driving he asks her where they should go and she suggests a variety of places; France, Italy (ofc) Michigan (?) and Canada (lol). There was an interesting fan theory that each of the places she named is references her ex boyfriends. France, Italy were places she went to with the Weeknd and Michigan references Taylor Lautner and Canada for both Justin and the Weeknd. They then frolic in a field in the middle of nowhere and she impulsively decides to set the car on fire to avoid going to jail, the Clyde to her Bonnie argues that she's too passionate and that the car is "life" while to her "jail is death" and she decides to go back to the party, while he and honestly probably the audience look confused at her statement.
Fans were coming up with their own theories for the music videos on Twitter.com. Some thought that the video was Selena Gomez's take on the Wes Anderson's film Moonlight Kingdom with a silent film twist. Other's that it was an homage to Goddard's Pierrot Le Fou because of the French style bob and outfits of the characters. One thing almost everyone agrees on is the Jelena inspired lyrics. Personally I liked the vintage vibes but would definitely like an explanation behind the music video!
