It’s the 70th anniversary of the Met Gala and this year’s event is beyond exciting.
First of all, it’s chaired by Anna Wintour and co-hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace. Tonight, they will be covering the controversial theme picked for this year: Heavenly Bodies. This is definitely a theme that will create a lot of news coverage and inspire everyone to wonder what the guests will wear.
Last year’s gala was also very popular because of the choice to have a monographic theme, which hasn’t occurred since 1983. Last year’s theme of Rei Kawakubo/Comme De Garcons seemed to have left a lot of room for the guests interpretation.
Rei Kawakuba creates art pieces with clothing, her designs and ideas have been innovative and thought provoking. Here are some examples of Kawakuba’s designs:
Sadly, the art of her designs seemed to be dismissed by a lot of attendees. Like Madonna, although she wore a thought provoking gown, it missed some key aspects that would make the camouflauge outfit art.
Or like Selena Gomez, stars pieced together beautiful outfits, but miserably missed the visual interest of Kawakubo's designs.
One key aspect of Comme de Garcons is the use of shaping the body, either by using an abundance of padding or using cut outs. Some celebrities did an astounding job of dressing Comme de Garcons for the red carpet or using other designers yet still matching the theme. Ruth Negga, wore vintage Valentino, yet the interesting shape of the dress shows an admirable interpretation of the theme.
While Stars like Rihanna and Anna Cleveland chose to dress in Comme De Garcon, displaying a more Avante-Garde look.
