The fashion industry is currently mourning the loss of the famous Tunisian-born couturier, Azzedine Alaia, who died at the age of 77 on Saturday in Paris, France. The cause of death was heart failure.

The "King of Cling" was known for his one-of-a-kind tailored designs, reinventing and revolutionizing the 80's fitting of knits, evening dresses, and leather pieces. Not adhering to seasonal trends, Alaia had his distinct means of "couturing", creating unparalleled styles that were greatly acknowledged by fashion enthusiasts around the world. Among his customers of A-list figures include supermodel Naomi Campbell, Tina Turner, Madonna, Michelle Obama, Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus.

Inspired by his twin sister, Alaia studied at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tunis about sculpture, focusing on the beauty of the human figure. By the late 50s, he embarked on his own journey in fashion design, working for Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, and Thierry Mugler. He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in the 80s, in which he ultimately became known for, and was voted Best Designer of the Year and Best Collection of the Year at the Oscars de La Mode.
