80’s and 90’s Revived at the Billboard Music Awards

1981
On Sunday the 2016 Billboard awards brought in summer fashion with strappy, shoulder-bearing silhouettes and summer colours. Playing host for the night, Ciara’s seven outfit changes hit nearly all of this season’s trends. Starting out on the red carpet, the past nominee wore a skin-bearing silver dress with matching heels that looked to be inspired by this year’s met gala theme. By the end of the evening, Ciara had donned a Camo mini dress, plunging necklines, thigh-high boots, nudes and even more pewter tones before closing out the show in a burgundy menswear-inspired gown, complete with dinner jacket-esque buttons and shoulder pads.

Shoulder padded menswear proved to be a trend, worn by Demi Lovato as well as performers Kesha, Rihanna and Madonna. Lovato’s take on masculine dress was a feminized Chanel suit jacket and trouser duo worn over a lace bodysuit, whereas Rhianna and Madonna’s get ups were more powerful, complete with stiff tailoring and padding.

Kesha also showed up in menswear, with a purple embroidered pantsuit for the red carpet and a similar white power suit for her performance. After debates of whether or not she would be performing following her legal and personal struggles with producer Dr. Luke, Kesha's duet with Ben Folds was one of the most anticipated performances of the night. After a long court battle for her rights, Kesha is the epitome of the power suit movement of the 80's.

Another highly anticipated performer of the evening was recipient of the Millennium Award,  Britney Spears. During the night, where she seemingly  paid homage to herself, she wore a black lace getup similar to the one she wore to the 2001 VMAs. Opening the awards show, Spears performed a roundup of her greatest hits, including Slave 4 U, Toxic and Womanizer, bringing back her late 90’s and early 00’s choreography and style.
