The United Nations “Every Woman Every Child” Gala Dinner, held this past Tuesday saw many a glamorous celeb stepping out in style to support the cause of child and maternal health in developing countries. The event took place at the New York Museum of Modern Art on the 25th of September. The newly named ambassador for the United Nations AIDS agency, Bollywood’s Aishwarya Rai, was seen rubbing shoulders with Debra Messing, Shaquille O’ Neal and Deepak Chopra, all the while looking completely gorgeous in a traditional red ensemble. The superstar spoke passionately about how close the cause is to her heart, saying that spreading awareness regarding women’s and children’s health issues has always been a priority for her and becoming a new mother has made her relate to the issue on an even more personal level Her new role involves advocating the U.N. Global Plan that aims to eliminate new HIV infections among children by 2015, with the focus being on India and 21 African nations. The initiative also addresses crucial issues such as family planning, child survival and access to essential commodities in order to achieve the goal of bettering the health of women and children around the world. U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, who is responsible for launching the initiative, reminded those in attendance that there are only three years left to meet the Millenium Development Goals of saving 16 million lives, preventing 33 million unwanted pregnancies, end stunting in 88 million children, and preventing pneumonia in 120 million children, all by the year 2015. To date, $10 billion have been given to the cause. Also in attendance were Lily Cole and Christy Turlington, who is also a U.S. Delegate to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women.
