CAFA 2016 Report

Canadian fashion industry insiders, media and celebrities joined forces to celebrate Canadian fashion talent at the third annual Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA). Global fashion and lifestyle icon Elle Macpherson accepted the Vanguard Award presented by Hudson’s Bay for her career achievements as an international trailblazer who has had a global impact on the fashion industry. “I want to thank CAFA for creating such an important platform to showcase Canada’s incredible fashion talent,” said Macpherson. “You have done exceptional work over the past three years to raise the profile of the talent here and have shown dedication in driving the economic development of the Canadian fashion industry.” Among the Canadian design talent who were honoured at this year’s gala: Jason Wu received International Canadian Designer of the Year, Herieth Paul won Model of the Year, Annie Horth collected their prize for Stylist of the Year, and Wayne Clark accepted an Outstanding Achievement award. Frank & Oak received the Joe Fresh Fashion Innovation award presented by model Karlie Kloss. Launched by Vicky Milner and Brittney Kuczynski, CAFA’s third gala stood out as one of the most highly anticipated events of the season. “We are thrilled to have the chance to honour so many outstanding Canadian designers and fashion talent,” said Vicky Milner, President, CAFA. “Beyond the gala and this incredible evening, we have the opportunity to truly showcase the inspiring individuals who work to make a career in fashion a viable option in Canada.” UNTTLD took home the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent, Fashion, while Lauren Klassen walked away with the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent, Accessories. They will each receive $10,000 and mentorship for a year with industry leaders, which include: Ashlee Froese, Partner, Fogler, Rubinoff LLP; Miriam Zittell, Designer/ Entrepreneur; Natasha Koifman, President of NKPR; Paulo Leone, Vice President of Strategy, The Community; Richard Simons, Vice President of Merchandising, Simons; Suzanne Timmins, Senior Vice-President and Fashion Director of Hudson’s Bay and Lord & Taylor. "The Canadian fashion industry represents a legion of innovation,” says Swarovski’s executive board member, Nadja Swarovski. “CAFA is a fantastic platform to champion Canadian designers on an international scale, and as a company with a heritage of supporting creativity, culture and rising talent, Swarovski is proud to support the CAFA Swarovski Awards for Emerging Talent." A first-time-ever partnership with CAFA and the Toronto Maple Leafs was announced at the gala. The new program will seek two fashion designers to create a men’s and women’s capsule collection to launch exclusively at Real Sports Apparel. Drawing inspiration from the Leafs’ new primary sweater and assisted sports apparel specialists, Mitchell & Ness, the two selected talents will hone their creativity to bring their collections to life for the 2017-18 season – a once in a lifetime pportunity to literally dress a nation and make a splash in the fashion world, far beyond our borders. “When it comes to fashion, Canada has a unique voice and story to tell,” added Brittney Kuczynski, Founding Director, CAFA. “Our aim is to engage and propel Canadian talent, to grow a stronger appreciation both at home and abroad. Having a group of like-minded people committed to the same cause serves as a wonderful vehicle to do so.”
