Buckets Of Ice For ALS Awareness

By: Ameena Iqbal The Ice Bucket Challenge has people dumping a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads and posting a video of it online to raise awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. They then challenge others to take part. Within 24 hours of being challenged, participants are to record themselves in continuous footage. First, they are to announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a bucket of water. The bucket is then to be lifted overhead and poured over the participant's head. Then the participant can call out a challenge to other people. The reason for the ice cold water to be poured on to their heads is so that people without the disease can feel, if for a moment, what people that have the disease experience. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When they fail to receive messages, the muscles lose strength, atrophy and die. ALS can strike anyone at anytime, regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin. It does not affect the senses, and only rarely does it affect the mind. The equipment costs for each patient average $137,000, while nursing and home care costs can be up to 10 times this amount. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 3 to 5 years. So far $31.5 Million in donations has been raised for ALS. maea101-87_2014_131330_high Here is a list of some of our favourites from the Ice Bucket Challenge, including our own mayor Rob Ford.
