By: Sarah Horsfall For any person, trying to break into the professional spotlight can be arduous. For young designers especially, the industry can be unyielding and rather bleak. Armed with needles and threads though, there are those aspiring designers who fight to conquer an inch of the glorious runway. Now, young designers have an opportunity to gain some finance for their business. The recently launched LVMH Prize (November 2013) is the Internet set-up by LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton. The Prize has been created to reveal and support young fashion designers. Each year, the prize will recognize a young designer and three fashion school graduates. It is open to any designer who is under the age of 40 and who has produced at least two collections. The LVMH Prize consists of a €300,000 grant and a year of mentoring. The “Graduate” prize is open to students of fashion. The three winners will receive a €10,000 grant and opportunity to work as part of the design team at an LVMH brand for one year. Selected from a shortlist of thirty, the twelve finalists will travel to Paris in May to present their ready-to-wear Fall ’14 collections at the LVMH headquarters. A panel of jurors who come from seven fashion houses will then judge the collections. Some of the jurors include: Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo, Raf Simons, Riccardo Tisci, and others. The winner will be announced May 28.
