The Fairmont Royal York Hotel

1371
When this hotel officially opened on June 11 1929 as The Royal York, it was known as the tallest building in the British Commonwealth, boasting 28 floors. Today, in 2012, as one passes by this striking architectural achievement at the corner of Front Street and University Avenue in Toronto, it is almost impossible not to pause for at least a fleeting second to admire the vast beauty the monument has to offer, oozing history and grandeur from its every tier. The hotel was the first of its kind in Toronto, complete with a 12,000-book library, 10 ornate passenger elevators, a concert hall with a 50-ton pipe organ, a glass-enclosed roof-garden, and its own golf course. While many changes and additions have been made since then, the hotel still retains its fantastic hand-painted ceilings, travertine pillars, wall hangings, crystal chandeliers, and ornate furnishings that hearken a bygone era of opulence. It is still known as one of the most luxurious hotels in Toronto, and regularly houses royalty of the blue-blooded kind, as well as of the Hollywood variety. With a history so rich and a vibe so decadent, why wouldn’t one choose the Fairmont Royal York Hotel as the venue for the day they will inevitably remember for the rest of their lives: their wedding day? The hotel is now offering new wedding packages, including a special South Asian Wedding Package. A Honeymoon Program is also in place at the Fairmont.
