TFI New Labels 2014

By: Sarah Horsfall On May 5 at One King West, four emerging Canadian designers will showcase their designs at Toronto Fashion Incubator’s (TFI) annual New Labels Fashion Design Competition. This year’s finalists will compete for a $25,000 cash prize for Most Promising New Label (presented by Suzanne Rogers), a feature in Flare magazine, and a look book photoshoot sponsored by CoverGirl and Pantene. TFI is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing and supporting fashion entrepreneurs. The organization provides mentoring, strategic programs, and educational seminars so that fashion designers and entrepreneurs can learn about marketing, sales, business planning, exporting, and cash flow. Not only award winning and highly acclaimed, the TFI model has been adopted by cities such as New York, Chicago, London, Paris, and Milan. Past winners have included Sid Neigum, Golnaz Ashtiani, and Anastasia Lemonova, and last year’s winner Sarah Stevenson. Stevenson has recently launched a collection for Target. The collection incorporates fifteen different pieces and can be found at Target locations across Canada. In order to bring a little more notoriety this year, TFI has named fashion icon, Jeanne Beker, as the event’s official emcee. Additionally, this year’s panel includes co-founder of TNT, Arie Assaraf, fashion director at Flare Magazine Tiyana Grulovic, noted fashion designer David Dixon, and philanthropist Suzanne Rogers. Currently there are six semi-finalists who have survived January’s judging session. Their garments were reviewed for fit, quality, innovation, line consistency, and interpretation from sketch to actual piece. These six semi-finalists will compete for four places on the TFI New Labels runway. TFI New Labels 2014 will announce the four finalists at the beginning of April. This year’s six semi-finalists include: Muhammad Alamgir (L’Momo) Miriam Baker (Alice Azur) Ashley Boutchér (Nomad of the Sun) Lois Van Koughnet (Lois Laine) Christopher Paunil & Chalo Barrueta (Christopher Paunil Designs) Laura Siegel (Laura Siegel Collection).
