New Girl does Indian Marriage Convention

2898
Just when I thought to myself that New Girl couldn't get any better, this Tuesday’s episode took place at an Indian marriage convention. Season 2 of the comedy has been exploring Cece’s (Hannah Simone) desire to be set up by her parents and have an arranged marriage. Throughout the past few episodes we've witnessed her meeting various suitors and their families in hopes of finding an Indian husband. In this episode titled “Table 34” Cece is set to attend an Indian marriage convention, and is followed there by the rest of the gang. Once at the marriage convention the gang took part in various ice breakers and other compatibility exercises, with the end goal being to try and find somebody to start a relationship with. One of the exercises that took place was a round of speed dating. Which got me thinking…this kind of thing really does happen!

I was already aware that South Asian speed dating is a thing and that different South Asian communities do in fact conduct networking type events that are designed as a way for their youth to mingle and get to know the opposite sex. Even within Toronto, so many of these events take place. Many of them are planned, but within the South Asian community so many of these so called ‘conventions’ are often simply titled networking events, picnics, or team building activities. Speed dating on the other hand is quite forward. It’s a way for singles to come together to seek a potential relationship by going a series of 8-10 minute dates.

Upon doing further research into the topic I discovered a whole online community calendar of upcoming events for the South Asian community. Especially with Valentines Day coming up, there are so many events taking place catering to South Asian singles. Within Toronto there are various speed dating events and social mixers happening, and there are even events catering specifically to those of certain religious backgrounds and age ranges. Apparently fastlife.ca is the go-to website for speed dating events in and around Toronto, the website promotes multiple events per week. And if you’re looking for an event similar to the one that the New Girl gang attended, and you’re hoping to find your own Cece (or Schmidt?) I think the Pre-Valentine's Day South Asian Social Mixer at Vagabondo (Yonge & Wellington in Toronto) on February 10th would be your closest bet. New Girl is on every Tuesday night at 9 pm EST on City TV right before The Mindy Project. By Summun Jafri
