International Day of the Girl 2012

1038
The United Nations confirms October 11th, 2012 as the world's first  International Day of the Girl. With the support of Plan Canada, Canada has led the international community in adopting this day. This day symbolizes women and girls as citizens and as powerful voices of change and progression in their families, their communities, and their nations. International Day of the Girl also represents equal opportunity for girls. With that being said, girls all around the world are faced with various social issues such as higher rates of violence, poverty, and discrimination. Surprisingly, girls in Canada have higher rates of depression, sexual harassment, and dating violence. In order to stop these issues, human rights are the key to girls having better communities. Improving girls' lives has a ripple effect. What is good for them is good for all of us.
