Get to Know: Mawi Jewelry

By Liz Guber As dictated by runways around the world, baroque embellishment is definitely having a moment. Proenza Schouler, Carven and Marni have all offered their takes on tapestry and brocade detailing, so have high-street retailers Zara and J Crew. In keeping with this hot fall trend, let us introduce you to Mawi Jewelry, whose pieces truly re-define the meaning of "Statement Necklace." A diplomat's daughter, Mawi was born in Manipur, in Northeast India and her nomadic childhood existence, and exposure to different cultures and crafts would become the major inspiration behind the must-have accessory brand. After studying fashion at Auckland Institute of Technology in New Zealand, Mawi relocated to New York, where she worked for Isaac Mizrahi. Drawn to London's creative atmosphere, Mawi moved to the bustling metropolis, which remains home to the jewelry line. After successful showings at London Fashion Week and 3 consecutive New Generation Awards from the British Fashion Council, the line was picked up by such luxury retailers as Barney's and Selfridges. The latest collection from Mawi is lust-worthy indeed. Unapologetically bedazzled and undeniably chic, the Fall 2012 offerings from the brand are worth the splurge! The impressively opulent designs are a mix of girly and edgy, with generous use of gold, rhinestones and arguably the most trendy embellishment of all: spikes. See a few pieces below.
