Elie Saab’s $400,000 Haute Couture Dream

By Lindsay Cooper Parisian Haute Couture fashion shows  hit the runways for the spring 2016 season this past week, with everyone from Valentino to Zuhair Murad in town. And with such great competition, Lebanese designer Elie Saab still managed to be the name on everyone’s lips. The atelier has a reputation for creating indulgent wedding gowns, having previously dressed Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy and Princess Claire of Luxembourg (whose gown featured 50,000 pearls and a 13 foot train, taking a rumoured 3,900 hours to make) for their royal weddings. While it may seem Elie Saab is at the peak of bridal extravagance, they out did themselves with a gown costing $288,000 (USD) (more than $404,000 CAD at the current rate of exchange). Reported to weigh 150 pounds, the dress has full-body crystal beading (no doubt done by hand), fastened with gold embroidery that offsets the delicate fabric’s subtle lilac hues. The crown jewel of Saab’s SS16 haute couture collection, this piece highlights the seasons “Enter India” theme. Putting a contemporary spin on the opulence of Victorian Era fashion on the subcontinent, the collection presents modest necklines and classic laces paired with combat boots and mini backpacks in metallic leathers.
