Bollywood Star relives 1,400 farmers of debt

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, is undeniably one of India's most popular stars. Over his 50 year career Amitabh has starred in almost 190 films including, Great Gatsby, Black and Baghban. This time Amitabh is making headlines for his amazing gesture to the 1,400 Mumbai farmers that we're affected by the long period of drought.

Amitabh has dipped into his own pocket to cancel out all loans taken on by the 1,400 farmers due to the drought. This debt accumulates to $560,000! As he write on his blog, "Gratitude leans across to the desire of removing some of the burdens that farmers continue to suffer from... and the inner peace it generates when the desired is completed,”

Last Wednesday thousands of farmers got together for the March in Mumbai, a protest against pending demands such as the waiver of loans due to long periods of drought. In 2015, it was determined that indebtedness was the leading cause of suicide for farmers, Amitabh's gesture is not only remarkable but also life changing for farmers struggling with debt.

According to Amitabh's blog post, the bank has provided the farmers with a "one time settlement document and certificate". Amitabh had a desire to hand deliver these documents to all the farmers, but it would be very difficult to bring all the farmers to where he lives. So Amitabth rented out a train with 70 spots available so the farmers could come to Mumbai City and he could personally hand them the documents! Remarkable!
