Driving ban lifted for Saudi Arabian women

1928

As of Sunday, the decade-long driving ban on Saudi Arabian women has officially been lifted. Hundreds of thousands of women on Saturday have been granted license. The law was first announced last September and liberated many women from hiring a male driver that allowed them to travel. Many women saw this as a reflection of a long fight for equal rights but many other restrictions are still in place, including the right to travel, marry, or work.

Nonetheless, police officers gave out flowers and congratulated them as women were issued with their driver's license. This is a big step for Saudi Arabia as it aligns itself with the rest of the world and enters into the 21st century.
