Jane Birkin Requests Hermès to Rename iconic “Birkin” Bag

The "Birkin" bag has long been a symbol of wealth, status and fashion. Introduced in 1984, it has since come in a variety of materials ranging from calf leather to ostrich, lizard, or crocodile skin. Prices vary based on the material used, but have been known to range from $10,00 to $150,000. Hermès has built its reputation on the Birkin bag, and it has become a symbol of the brand's exclusivity. On July 29th 2015, actress and singer Jane Birkin requested the luxury house to remove her name from the iconic crocodile-skin bag. She has cited the cruel methods used on crocodile farms that raise the animals for their skins. Hermès has expressed concern over several videos released by PETA which showed the animals being crammed into concrete pits and skinned while still conscious, and plans to investigate the farms further. They have also stated that no skins from that facility have been used to make their bags. Jane Birkin's request appears to have not damaged relations between herself and the iconic company. Hermès stated "Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for many years." jane-birkin-bag
