Today is the first Monday of May. While many associate May with feelings of spring, for the fashion and celebrity community, the beginning of May is all about the MET Gala. This year’s theme will focus on Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garcons, an iconic Japanese designer who for the past 40 years has making audiences rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity. She is the first living designer, since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983, that the Gala will be paying sole tribute to. Kawakubo will be acting as an honorary chair tonight, along with Anna Wintour, Pharrell Williams, and Katy Perry.
The designer’s exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will open on May 4 and is titled “The Art of In-Between.” The past few MET Galas have been known for producing some of the most talked about looks, who can forget Rihanna’s legendary yellow Chinese couture-inspired gown that was designed by Guo Pei, so we expect just as much, if not more, for this year’s fundraiser.
