Meryl Streep is making headlines after the Golden Globes on Sunday night, not for her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, but for her speech that followed. After receiving her lifetime achievement award, the 67-year-old three-time Oscar winner took on a serious tone as she addressed the audience. While she did not name anyone, it was obvious whom her remarks alluded to as she cited an instance where the upcoming POTUS, Donald Trump had allegedly mocked a disabled reporter while on the campaign trail. “There was one performance this year that stunned me,” Streep began. “It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life. “And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.Disrespect invites disrespect; violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” she continued on, her words resonating with the audience. To no one’s surprise, Trump responded to the speech through Twitter. He claimed to not have seen the speech, but opted to instead attack Streep, calling her “over-rated” and a “Hillary lover”. Regardless of your political beliefs, I think many can agree that Streep deserved the award for her countless outstanding performances and her speech received a standing ovation. Though there are critics who are denouncing Streep's 'performance' saying that the kind of attitude shown at the ceremony by Streep, and the overwhelmingly moving response she received speaks of a strong undercurrent of disconnect between the people of the country who voted for President Trump, and the 'liberal elites' specially those in Hollywood.
