After the Miss USA pageant on Sunday, one of the contestants became an overnight celebrity on social media and surprisingly it’s not the winner.
Miss Indiana, Mekayla Diehl, has been the talk of the twitterverse after people saw her body in the swimsuit competition and praised her for having a ‘normal’ and more relatable body compared to the other contestants’ unrealistic bodies.
The 25 year-old Mekayla Diehl definitely stood out for having a curvier and healthier appearance than the rest and this made her famous with the women watching the pageant. Even the supermodel Petra Nemcova spoke out about Miss Indiana’s body, “I think it’s fantastic. Each person has a different body type. Some people are naturally skinny, some curvy. We have to celebrate all different shapes of the body. The main thing is to be healthy.”
Although she didn't make it past the semi-finals, she definitely made an impact and caused controversy, which may have been the best thing to have happened to her.
Diehl’s fantastic body didn't come easy but she explains that she never went to unhealthy extremes to become fit unlike other beauty pageant contestants do, “I trained very hard for the body I have, but I didn't go to extremes, and I’m proud of that,” she said.
Even though Mekayla may not be your average girl-next-door, the fact that she raised awareness about body image ideals in contests like this, is a big step and hopefully will jump start the process of being able to see more relatable girls in pageants.
