Sadiq Khan was sworn in as the new Mayor of London, England this past weekend after defeating opponent Tory Zac Goldsmith by 1,310,143 votes to 994,614. His victory makes him the third mayor of London followed by Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson and has ended eight years of Conservative control of City Hall. Khan is not only the first South Asian man to be elected, but also the city's first Muslim mayor. According to his campaign website, his vision for London is to give people the same opportunities he had. "My vision for London is a simple one - I want all Londoners to have the same opportunities that our city gave me: a home they can afford, a high-skilled job with decent pay, an affordable and modern transport system and a safe, clean and healthy environment."
