Rio Olympics: Selfie Nations

North and South Korea briefly put their differences aside to participate in the universal custom and rite: the selfie. Since their separation at the end of the Second World War, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea have been suffering from near constant antagonism. None of this was displayed at the women's artistic gymnastics qualifiers in Rio's 2016 Summer Olympics when South Korea's Lee Eun-Ju and North Korea's Hong Un-Jong united to snap a friendly pic.

This neighbourly gesture occurred August 4th, when the 17-year-old Eun-Ju and 27-year-old (and gold medalist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics) Hong Un-Jong were participating in a practice session. One of the reasons for the publicity surrounding a normally common occurance (there are countless selfies posted around the world on a daily basis) may be the other unsportsmanlike behaviour from the other athletes (take the Lebanese team refusing to ride in the same bus as the Israeli team, for instance).

Embodying the chief Olympic values, the spirit of togetherness and putting aside one's differences, is what makes this moment so special. We hope to see more moments of bridging boundaries and celebrating the best part of the Games: togetherness. By ROWAN DALKIN
