The very existence of a movie like Jism or Jism 2 speaks volumes about the place Indian cinema has come to.  Like it or not, the fact that an erotic thriller is in production shows change in the subject matter of Bollywood movies; gone are the days when an on-screen kiss was taboo. The much anticipated and/or feared erotic thriller Jism 2 was released this past weekend on August 3rd, 2012 and is currently showing in limited Canadian theatres. Will it receive the audience it desires? Or will the South Asian community shun it as disgrace to their cultural values? Well, based on numbers from opening weekend, people are definitely watching as the movie has surpassed expectations raking in 21 crores (roughly $3.8 million USD). The movie stars the controversial Sunny Leone, an Indian/American/Canadian porn star who recently got introduced to South Asian audiences through her stint on Big Boss in 2011. It was on that show that she was offered the part in the Jism sequel. Directed by Pooja Bhatt and co-starring Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh, the movie has solidified its presence in Bollywood. Even before the movie was released, based on the poster alone, there were several protests throughout India objecting the release and proliferation of such images. The movie continues to come under fire from various cultural and religious groups across India, and only time will tell whether this public outrage has any bearing on future productions of erotic thrillers. As far as Sunny Leone is concerned, she has already been offered more Bollywood roles and hopes to one day work with none other then Salman Khan. Let's wait and see whether her hopes will turn into reality, we would not be surprised if they do. By: Saima Hasan
