Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel: Marvel’s First Muslim Character

2006
Ms Marvel, born Kamala Khan, is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City. Created by Basha K Ali and directed by Bilall Fallah, Adil E Arbi, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, this story is a six-part series on Disney+. Playing Ms Marvel is Imani Vellani, a Pakistani-born and Ontario-raised 19-year-old.

After Kamala's strict parents refuse to let her attend AvengerCon in a Captain Marvel costume, she sneaks out to go to the convention with her best friend, Bruno, played by actor Matt Linz. Kamala discovers her new superpowers at the event when she realizes that she can shoot out bursts of energy from her hand.

The series focuses on the origin story of the character as she navigates family quarrels, friendship drama, crushes, high school bullies, and of course, her new superpowers. It is a mix of racing action scenes and sweet coming-of-age drama. Vellani has found a renewed appreciation for her Pakistani heritage through Ms Marvel, as will more girls who will relate to this powerful character.

Ms Marvel is now streaming on Disney+ with new weekly episodes.
