Salvatore Ferragamo, one of the world’s leading luxury brands, decided to honour their most iconic mid-heeled shoe design called the Vara. Created in 1978, the Vara, is a simple yet chic design with classic lines and a prominent bow, which has become one of the most famously recognizable shoes to have been created by Ferragamo. The 35th anniversary celebration enlisted the talent of photographer, Claiborne Swanson Frank, to compile an art gallery featuring some of the world’s most prominent fashion ‘It-girls’ such as Miroslava Duma, Lauren Santo Domingo, Olivia Palermo, Alexandra Richards, Elettra Weidemann, and Lauren Remington Platt. Only 21 girls were selected for the project, to create the beautifully curated online gallery called L’Icona, which launched May 1. These trend-setting women will be portrayed individually in a compilation of 21 portraits, each wearing their own customized pair of either the Vara of Varina (a ballet-flat version of the classic shoe), hand-selected by Ferragamo creative director Massimiliano Giornetti himself. Justin Wu has also been a part of the project creating a short film starring all 21 women shown around the world in the customized Vara shoes including a fresh assortment of colors ranging from Blue Scuro, Lava, Acqua, Rosso, and an exclusive summery print.
The most compelling and special feature of this celebration is that L’Icona, is also an online project that allows customers worldwide to create their own custom pair of the Vara. This is the first time that these shoes have ever had the ability to be custom ordered by anyone! This means that the girls here at SHE can also obtain our very own one-of-a-kind pair of the signature Ferragamo shoe. Comprised of a mid-sized heel, rounded toe and grosgrain bow with embossed gold plaque that fashion icons everywhere have slipped their feet into over the decades, will now be further immortalized by this special online project.
