Canadian national anthem officially gender neutral

2287

The bill to change the lyrics of O' Canada received royal assent yesterday morning, as told by Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.

The new wording alters the second line of the anthem's English version to "in all of us command" from "in all thy sons command."

The updated version was sung by Members of Parliament a few hours after the bill received royal assent, which was followed by a major applause. Canadian athletes at the 2018 Winter Olympics also sang the revised anthem as the national flag was being raised.

Late Liberal MP Mauril Belanger was the instigator of the effort in the 1980s, who wanted to make the anthem more inclusive. The bill was passed despite the numerous sparked debates and rejections.

Joly says the government will be endorsing the new O Canada at no extra cost.
